GIANT, 1956
By Sarah | October 6, 2009

Almost a month ago now I watched the film GIANT from 1956. I can not get the images out of my head. The look of the film keeps haunting me in such a good way. The cast is incredible: Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, and even Dennis Hopper.

But its not the characters that I’m stuck with as much as the image of the landscape. The film was shot in Marfa, TX. Although, I think its more than just a hidden nostalgia for West Texas that has me captured. The image that comes up most in my mind is of the home on the Benedict Ranch. The house itself became an icon for the film and was designed by the art director Boris Levin. This huge dark Victorian mansion just stands in the middle of nothing, in complete isolation.

There is something about that choice that I just love so much. I read somewhere that if the state of Texas had a film, it would be GIANT.
